What are CBD Tinctures?

CBD tinctures are a popular way for both newbies and seasoned users to enjoy their CBD. Many CBD fans like using tincture because they don’t have to smoke it. Nearly every major CBD brand, like nu-x®, Populum or CBDistillery offers some kind of CBD tincture. However, it’s still pretty common for people not to truly understand what CBD tinctures are, or how to use them.

How is CBD Tincture Made?

CBD tinctures are small vials of CBD mixed with viscous liquid. Usually, a CBD company will make a slurry by mixing ethanol with hemp plant matter and then applying heat until all that’s left is a thick, amber-colored substance. Many companies will add carrier oils or artificial flavoring to make CBD tinctures. Other companies, like nu-x, will use natural hemp oil and terpenes to make their CBD tinctures.

How to use CBD Tincture

CBD tinctures are taken orally. While this might sound simple enough, there are actually two different ways that you can take CBD through your mouth. The first is to dab some CBD tincture onto your tongue and swallow it. In addition, some users like to mix in CBD oil with their tea, coffee, or food.

This is the most common and easiest way to use CBD orally. Instead of dripping CBD onto the tongue, some users place it under their tongue. This is called using CBD “sublingually.”

Regardless of which way a person takes CBD tincture, they should make sure they eat first. The amount of CBD that the stomach absorbs increases by 500 percent if the user has eaten recently.

While there is no standardized CBD dosage, there are some general guidelines for choosing the right CBD dose. Usually, about 1 – 6 milligrams of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight per day is a good rule of thumb.

How does a CBD Tincture get Absorbed?

When someone swallows CBD oil, it’s absorbed by their stomach and passes through the liver before reaching the bloodstream. When CBD is absorbed in this way, the liver removes some of it before it reaches the bloodstream That makes it the least effective of the two ways to use CBD orally. This area has thin skin and a multitude of blood vessels.

This allows the body to absorb CBD directly into the bloodstream, without being filtered through the liver.

Pros and Cons:

Swallowed:
– Pros:
o Easiest and most common way to use CBD tincture
o Good for beginners
– Cons:
o Takes a while to reach the bloodstream: (1 – 6 hours)

Sublingually:
– Pros:
o Fastest and most effective way to use CBD tincture (30 min – 1 hour)
– Cons:
o Takes a long time for CBD to be absorbed

Purity of CBD Tincture

Most CBD tincture manufacturers will offer purity tests for their products. These companies send their products out to a third-party lab for a COA to break down the exact makeup of their products, including the existence of certain terpenes, cannabinoids, or other organic compounds. By reading these CBD lab reports, an informed consumer can narrow down exactly what they’re looking for in a CBD tincture.
