Member Question Time: How to kick a cold and get ahead of it before it gets worse.

This is a question that I think we all have since we have all had colds, especially since cold and flu season is upon us!

My tips for cold and flu- Zinc! Zinc is so fantastic. It’s important for proper immune function and helps boost our immune system too. If you feel a cold coming on, get the zinc and take as directed. You can also do zinc lozenges throughout the day. The recommended dosage for adults is between 8-11mg per day.

Vitamin C-Yes, this is a tried and true remedy, but it really works best if you take it daily, prior to any cold or illness. Doctors recommend between 65-90 mg per day for adults, but it’s best to ask your doctor what they suggest. Vitamin C can cause you to have diarrhea with too much, but it’s generally considered to be safe.

Diffusion- A steam bath or humidifier is excellent to break up mucus and chest congestion and adding essential oils is a great way to get some healing mist inside your body. One of my favorites is lavender, peppermint, and lemon. This is great for allergies, nasal congestions and simple colds.

Home made chicken soup-yup, seriously. If you are able, or someone else is, get fresh chicken and veggies, fresh, organic broth (unsalted) and fresh spices. Start early or a pot on the stove or crock pot and let the chicken cook in brother and water. Take it out when it’s cooked and let cool. Chop it up and add it back to the broth/water and add your veggies and spices. Then just simmer. The natural vitamins and immune system boosters will be so good for you and it’s easier on a nauseous tummy too!

Liquids and rest- if all else fails, just let the cold run its course. Get lots of rest and drink lots of clear liquids with minimal sugar.
