Spiritual wellness can be difficult to find in this day and age. Everyone seems angry, frustrated, or depressed. In fact, the CDC reports that more than 1 in 20 Americans over the age of 12 reported depression in a 2005 survey.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can make small life changes today that can contribute to your physical and mental fitness as well as improving your spiritual well-being. Here are seven actions you can take:

  1. Meditation Meditation is a practice that can improve both your physical and mental health. It’s especially beneficial in soothing the mind, which is helpful for people who are in the process of addiction recovery. The Art of Living writes that meditation can:

  1. Exercise

Exercise, naturally, is good for your physical health, but it can also improve your mental well-being, too. It releases chemicals into your brain that help to reduce stress, allowing you to better deal with mental tension according to this Huffington Post article. It can also provide the “reward” of a natural high, which you can get from running or other aerobic activity.

Finally, exercise can build your self-confidence as you become healthier and accomplish your fitness goals.

  1. Spend Time In Nature

Spending time in nature has numerous benefits, from boosting Vitamin D levels to combating depression to reducing stress by lowering your levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.

However, even if you can’t get outdoors too often, studies show that just looking at images or sounds of nature can improve your mood and your self-esteem. Schedule time each week, if possible to get out in nature for a hike or a picnic and decorate your office with nature images when you can’t.

  1. Affirmations

A study from Carnegie Mellon University found that using self-affirmations helps boost a person’s ability to solve problems and even increased grade-point averages. At the beginning of the school year, students were asked to write why their top value was important to them. Then they were asked to complete a problem-solving task. This short activity reduced the effects of chronic stress on the students.

  1. Avoid Media

A recent study by Pew Research showed that 26 percent of American adults claim they are now online “almost constantly.” That exposes them to negative impacts from social media and news organizations. Additionally, blue light from devices can impact sleep time and quality.

If you are feeling emotional, angry, or depressed by the news or the reactions you see online, it is a good time to take a “media diet.” Spend some time without your phone or other devices, turn off the TV, and do something interesting and creative with your time.

  1. Choosing Your Reaction To Bad News

We cannot change circumstances that are out of our control. We can, however, change how we react and respond to those situations especially when they are painful or challenging. According to Elite Daily, “We can choose to live the life we want, no matter how tough it can get.”

Often, the most inspiring and encouraging people that attract us are those who have overcome extreme adversity. Their inspiration lifts our souls. Find examples of people who have overcome your challenges and get to know what they did to overcome them.

Gaining spiritual wellness is not difficult but it does involve changing your mindset. Use these seven activities to boost your soul and watch them enhance your life.
