I love sugar scrubs! I am a scrub addict and I used to buy scrubs you see on shelves of your favorite stores, but as I got more into cutting chemicals, I wanted something more natural. The problem is that a lot of “natural” products, still have certain chemicals. Even though these ingredients may be FDA approved as safe, it wasn’t quite up to my own standards for what I wanted in a product.
When I made my first sugar scrub, I was excited to learn how easy it was! Here’s a great little recipe that is super easy!
What you’ll need:
Dark colored jars, you’ll want to use a size that is the same size or slightly larger than your amount of ingredients, so in this case no smaller than 4 ounces. You can also use smaller jars if giving as gifts. My favorite are from amazon below.
PET plastic jars
(The reason for the dark-colored jars is because essential oils need to stay out of the light. You also need to make sure they are glass or PET plastic. Regular plastic will corrode from the essential oils after a while, so it’s best to use glass or PET plastic.)
2 ounces of sugar, you can use regular white sugar or raw sugar (depending on how course you want the scrub), brown sugar is great for a finer, less abrasive scrub for sensitive skin
2 ounces of carrier oil, I love hemp seed oil and almond oil.
Essential oil of your choice. I typically only use about 30 drops. My favorite company is between Eden’s Garden and Plant Therapy. Both offer free shipping.
Simply mix all ingredients and put in your jar. Use about a tablespoon each time you shower and not only will your skin be smooth, but you will indulge in the benefits of essential oils with natural scent and nourishing oils.
My favorite essential oil combos to use:
- Peppermint and Vanilla
- Sweet Orange, Lemon and Lavender
- Jasmine and Vanilla
You can equally break up the oil drops into even amounts or experiment by starting small (4-8 drops at first and then add to the max amount as needed or to your preference.
Another great thing to do is use flower-infused carrier oils. Flower infused carrier oils are easy to make at home and so healthy!
All you need is a large, clear glass jar such as a canning jar. I use both half pint and pint jars.
Take dried flowers such as roses, lavender, Calendula or really any of your choice that you love.
Put enough in the jar to cover the bottom, about 1/2 inch. Then top with your carrier oil, make sure the flowers are completely saturated and the oil is filled above the flower level.
Add a capsule of Vitamin E. This not only helps preserve your product, but adds lovely moisturizing properties.
Close the jar tightly and set in a sunny spot for about 2 weeks. Every so often, you’ll want to mix your ingredients, you don’t need to vigorously shake, but just gently roll the jar around a bit so the ingredients mix.
After your two weeks, you can strain using a jar strainer, cheesecloth or anything that will help strain out the flowers. I even used coffee filters and they work great.
Simply pour into the bottle of your choice and you’ve got flower infused carrier oil! You can use this oil pretty much however you want in your products or even apply directly to skin!
This process takes time, but I promise, you will love the results!
My favorite blends:
- Hemp Seed and arnica
- Fractionated coconut oil and lavender
- Hemp Seed and Calendula
You can do the same process with herbs and olive oil, using fresh or dried herbs. Then just add to a bottle with a spout, you don’t even have to strain the herbs if you don’t want to, then use in your favorite recipes!
I’d love to hear what you think!
